Music

Music

Our outstanding Music School enables students to fulfil their potential in both curricular and co-curricular musical activities. Whether they’re keen to develop their vocal ability or master a musical instrument, our extensive teaching and practice rooms, high tech music studio and numerous performance venues ensure students have the best resources available to excel.

Specialist Individual music lessons are available to students of all abilities in a range of different instruments including piano, organ, violin, viola, cello, double-bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, trumpet, saxophone, euphonium, trombone, tuba, percussion, acoustic, electric guitar and harp. Singing lessons are also on offer and there is also a wide range of musical ensembles and choirs for students to join.

Participation in school events throughout the year, such as recitals, musicals, concerts and House Music competitions, and performing in national orchestras and ensembles is highly encouraged and allows pupils to build confidence, express themselves musically and fine tune their performance skills. In the past, students have performed at the prestigious Blenheim Palace, dazzled in show-stopping productions, and even toured Europe with the school choir. Students benefit from having access to professional performers through workshops, master classes, recitals and concerts.

Dance

Dance is a great way for students to develop their fitness levels, confidence and performance skills, whilst exploring the vast variety of dance styles from around the world.

Two dance teachers offer a multitude of dance genres, from ballet, contemporary jazz, lyrical modern and street dance to name but a few, and students of all abilities have the chance to perfect their dance moves and work towards dance examinations.

There are many performance opportunities throughout the year at Taunton School, from School Productions and Theatre Production Weeks, to Performing Arts evenings and An Evening of Dance, where pupils can showcase their dance skills and achievements in front of a live audience of families and friends.

Drama

Taunton School Senior Singing in Drama
Drama

Students in every part of the school are able to access drama as a co-curricular activity. We are fortunate to have excellent drama facilities, including a fully equipped theatre, drama hall and specialist studios which help to encourage students to take to the stage and perfect their performance and acting techniques.

For younger students, our drama clubs and speech and drama lessons all aim to develop your child’s communication and performance skills, whilst providing tips and techniques to help build confidence and encourage self expression. Pupils can also experience fun and engaging topic-led workshops provided by visiting theatre companies.

Each year the Senior School Drama department offers students the opportunity to audition and be involved in a whole school production. In recent years, these productions have included Much Ado About Nothing, Antigone, The Importance of Being Earnest, Antigone and The 39 Steps.

For students aged 13-18, the department also offers Drama for Fun and TS Thespians. These clubs allow students to explore Drama in a more relaxed way, with likeminded individuals.

Throughout the year students can participate in a wide and varied programme of Taunton School productions and events. These include Performing Arts Evenings, Informal Dance and Drama Evenings, Parents’ Day, the National Schools’ Shakespeare Festival and the Taunton Music and Drama Festival, where pupils can showcase their talents and achievements in front of live audiences.

Art

Art

There are lots of opportunities for students to develop their creative skills and get involved with art and photography outside of lessons. These opportunities include: weekly art clubs, master classes, art and photography competitions, scholar sessions and individual tutorials. They are designed to challenge the students practically, theoretically and personally whilst also leaving plenty of room for fun and creativity.
