Remembrance Sunday Parade
On Sunday 11th November the School held its traditional remembrance service in the Chapel followed by a brief service at the War Memorial in the School Science Block. The Guard of Honour was performed by members of the SchoolÕs Army, Navy and Air Force.

The Guard of
Honour
The Headmaster and Chaplain laid
the wreath. In particular those Old Tauntonians who died in World War 1 and World
War 2 were remembered. 165 OTs
died in World War 1 and 149 died in World War 2, names of those OTs are
engraved in the Science Block memorial.
Also remembered were OTs and Parents currently serving in the Armed
Forces. Frank Baker was a Wills
West boy from 1937-39, he died aged 23 in 1944, he was awarded the Victoria
Cross.
Stewart Sinclair
School coach driver Stewart who served 22 years in the Royal Signals, was recently presented with a medal from the Malaysian Government. The medal was struck by the Malay Government as a Thank You for the assistance given by the commonwealth troops of which Stewart was a part.

Stewart Sinclair with his
medal
A state of emergency was declared between 1957 & 1966 in the fledgling democracies of Malaya, Singapore and Borneo. It was fought in both Malaya and Borneo jungles.
Colonel Iajri Alwi, Military Attache for the Malaysian Government in Britain, presented the medal to Stewart and 299 other veterans in Weymouth.
The medal has a controversial, political twist in that it can be accepted but not worn on parade. However, Stewart wore his on 11/11/2007 in Vivary Park.
Congratulations Stewart.
The Lisk: Question Time
The Lisk History SocietyÕs annual Question Time event drew an audience of nearly eighty. The panel comprised Joss Hiett (Labour), Charlie ÔWashingtonÕ Walker (Conservative), Colin Cortbus (English Democrats), Flick Nixon (WomenÕs Freedom Movement) and Will Grove (Live and let Love Alliance); the Chairman was new History teacher Mr Hawkins.
Questions were posed on issues including immigration, the McCanns, abortion, the Saudi State visit, Iraq, Cornish independence and BritneyÕs children. Colin proposed locking up the king of Saudi Arabia; Flick advocated a Ôjab, jab and jab againÕ policy (apropos cervical cancer jabs for men) - to which Joss countered ÔI donÕt have a cervixÕ; Will advocated Ôspreading the loveÕ; and Washington, Taunton SchoolÕs own answer to Boris Johnson – and who, appropriately, didnÕt seem to know quite what he stood for – was somehow elected to the Lisk Committee at the end of proceedings. All in all, an enjoyable evening and, once again, proof that in the Lisk we donÕt just learn it but live it!

Katie Glover, this year's Head
Girl and a member of the Lisk History Society Committee, this week finished a
commendable 3rd in the South West region Great Debate competition. This was run
by the Historical Association with the question being 'What has been the most
significant scientific discovery in the past 100 years?'
Katie spoke on DNA and then had
to field questions from the judges. Sadly, only the winner goes through to the
national final so Katie just misses out. Last year, the winner was interviewed
on BBC TV and shared a platform with David Starkey - who is scheduled to
speak in next term's History and Arts Public Lectures at Taunton School - and
Tony Benn to launch the History Matters campaign.
And, speaking of which, the
first edition of an in-house history magazine entitled History Matters has
just been published. Edited by Hannah Plant, who came in the top 10 students
nationally for GCSE History, it contains a dizzying range of
historical writings/quizzes/reviews etc - all the work of TS students. If
you cannot get your hands on a copy, it can be viewed shortly on www.thelisk.co.uk
Currently, the History Department
is completing preparations for Easter trips to Morocco (6th form) and
Berlin/Krakow/Auschwitz (4th form).
Don't just learn it: live it!
