RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS

As we enter autumn, many more achievements have been made by both our pupils and members of staff:

Hugh Todd –

The prestigious Services to Schools’ Rugby Award has been made to Hugh Todd, formerly Master i/c Rugby at Taunton School.

For over 25 years Hugh coached and selected representative sides at Under 18 level, at one time helping run the Somerset age group side whilst also being in charge of coaching both Somerset Under 21’s and the senior county side!

In more recent times, he served as a National Selector with the England Under 18 team, a period during which such names as Jonny Wilkinson, Ollie Barkley and Matthew Tait emerged as stars of the future.

The award, one of just a handful made annually by the RFU, was presented to Hugh by Eric Blackman, President of the ERFSU, at the recent AGM of the South West Schools and Clubs.

Kate Goodridge-Griffiths and Max Kelly -
Kate and Max were chosen to sing solos at this year’s National Children’s Choir Concert in Harrogate. In addition to this, Max was awarded the prize of Top Boy Chorister.

In November, Kate takes to the stage again for two weeks when she will be singing two duets in the Bridgwater Carnival Concerts as a front of stage act.

These concerts are a really big event in the local area and are sold out for 13 consecutive nights to a full capacity audience of around 550 in the Bridgwater Town Hall.

Our second match on the re-surfaced Jowett was a convincing success across the board.

In the 1st XI the defence was strong, the forwards were hungry for goals and support from parents was excellent.
Centre – forward Connie, scored a hat-trick and once again the game was a real team effort, despite several injuries and maladies flying around.

The 2nd and 3rd XI teams also played well – neither conceding a goal.

OTHER EVENTS:

European Day of Languages:

Crepes, cakes and communication!

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, Senora Diaz worked extremely hard to show us that English is not enough at Taunton School. It was the European Day of Languages and the MFL department, together with the prep school produced an excellent assembly.

Later in the day, there was also a street market where you could buy cakes of different types, Spanish jewellery, second hand books and there was a poster competition which Dr Newton came to judge. There was also a “Guess the name of the teddy bear” competition and a matching game linking names of places to their pictures.
However, the piece de resistance was Mrs Chalcraft in her French beret making and selling crepes like a true professional.

The following day there was lunch with a European flavour which always proves to be a favourite with the pupils as you can try dishes from different countries whilst listening to pop music in different languages.

All the staff wore the colours of their national flags, even painting the flags on their faces, and Mr Brown showed himself to be a true male model and wore his canary yellow shirt with a matching red tie. He was the height of sartorial elegance.

It was a truly splendid event and will be repeated next year because we all need to remember that: English is not enough!
