GCSE Scientists Explore Coal Mines

Posted: 7th November 2016

It was an early start for TSI students studying GCSE Chemistry, Physics and Combined Science this Sunday. Pupils headed off for their big trip to Big Pit coal mine in Blaenavon, South Wales.

Accompanied by Mr Turner, Mrs Sorrel and Mr Stephenson, TSI’s visit to this World Heritage Site was mainly to examine the importance of coal as a raw material. Historical, social and political aspects of mining were also covered in the exhibition housed in what was the pit head baths. The highlight of the day, however, was kitting-up and going down in the lift to get a feel for what life is like underground for coal miners.
