A busy week in Nursery and Pre-prep

Posted: 24th February 2017

Storm Doris has certainly entertained and whipped Nursery and Pre-Prep into a frenzy today! Huge gusts of wind have loosened tiles and spread tree debris (all in hand as we are well looked after by our grounds and maintenance/health and safety teams – thank you) – so we have run free and wild on Greenham field which has certainly been exhilarating! And there are lots of little pink cheeks and all have a healthy glow.

This week we have had a superb workshop with the Northern Ballet Dance Theatre company and the children were involved in a Goldilocks and the Three Bears creative movement workshop.

We have also been entertained by Year 4 as we watched the dress rehearsal of Snow White. Fantastic! And only four days to get it up and running. Thank you Year 4 – marvellous entertainment.

Parents have enjoyed ‘Help Your Boy Succeed’; Gary Wilson first visited Pre-Prep in 2008 and really helped us as a team re-evaluate our curriculum offer and accessibility for boys and if the boys are sorted then the girls are too! Thank you to Paul Billings and the PTA for putting on this event for staff and parents.

In Pre-Prep and the Nursery we continue to evaluate our practice and are focusing on flourishing girls. Another excellent workshop will be available for parents soon, so watch this space!

We are also looking at handwriting and have Think Write (writing with front ascenders and joining from Reception) joining us for our INSET on the 18th April.

At the opposite end of the spectrum we have also delivered a potty training tips workshop too!

I’ve also been in London at the Nursery World Conference, I have led sessions with other local head teachers on leadership and staff development, thirty hour funding (watch this space) and during the holidays we hosted a training session about assessment and planning frameworks for teachers and practitioners.

Every week in Pre-Prep, Friday Celebration Assembly gives all children a chance to pat themselves on the back if they have done their best and worked hard and all children, throughout the year, get certificates for kindness, helping one another, excellent manners, working hard and all share their academic work. It really is another favourite time of the week for us all. This week I’ve been impressed with Walt the Bear’s diary. In Year 1 Walt the Bear goes home with the children and he joins in the family fun. He gets up to all sorts of adventures and the children are encouraged to take photos of him in action and free write a diary. What a great time he has!

Next week Nursery 4 are off to Hestercombe on Monday and Year 2 have their Forest School on Wednesday. Please can the children wear their track suits to school and ensure welly boots are available too. Lunch as normal! It is also World Maths day on Wednesday and we will be having a Maths focused day and Thursday is World Book Day. For this day we ask your children come to school dressed as a book character. We have planned lots of fun and games, that all involve reading and books and the day starts off with a parade of book characters! You are most welcome to stay and take photographs and watch at drop off, before they disappear into World Book Day Assembly taken by our very own story teller, Jill Pincock!
