It is lovely to be back in school today after two days in Surrey inspecting another school for the Independent Schools Inspectorate. I do this twice a year and it helps us at TPS to keep up-to-date with the very best practice in prep schools around the country. Thank you to Mr Coleman, the Deputy Head, for holding the reins so well in my absence.
It is hard to believe that January is over already and that we only have one more week before half term. I am sure that this is due to the fact that there is always so much happening and so many events and opportunities for our boys and girls to enjoy.
Today is Cooper’s mufti charity day and we are collecting money for a fabulous cause, the James Willetts Fund, which raises funds for the Brain Tumour Charity. James was a pupil of Taunton School who tragically died at the age of 18 and whose wish was that more specific research be done into paediatric brain tumours. The Taunton Arts Festival is currently taking place and I am delighted that many of our pupils are participating in this. It is so important for children to have opportunities to perform in all sorts of situations and I particularly enjoyed last Monday’s assembly on the Chinese New Year, delivered with such confidence by the members of 6W. The ability to stand up and speak clearly and loudly in front of a large audience is a very valuable life skill, which will stay with our boys and girls for the rest of their school and working lives.
Finally, it is our Spring Term Open Morning tomorrow morning and it is good to report that we are experiencing a large level of interest in places for next year. If you have friends who are considering joining the school, please do encourage them to come along tomorrow, or to make contact with our Admissions Manager, Mrs Flay. Families wanting a place in Reception for September 2018 are now going onto a waiting list and there are other year groups which are nearly full. We are very mindful of class sizes, and I can confirm to you today that the two classes currently in Year 4 will split in September into three smaller classes for the start of their Year 5, whilst the three classes currently in Year 6 will split into four smaller classes for the start of their Year 7. We are fully committed to ensuring that our pupils continue to receive the high level of individual attention which is a hallmark of the TPS education.
