Biathlon Success

Posted: 23rd March 2018

Ten pupils from Taunton Preparatory School took place in the National Biathlon Championships in London last weekend, with 10-year-old pupil Tom Webb finishing 6th in the country in his age group.

Pupils braved the wind and snow to compete in the National Biathlon Championships at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre last weekend. It was the girls’ finals on the first day, which saw them running in blizzard conditions and swimming in the 50m pool. Pupil Macey Barrett finished in the top 20 in the under 13 category. The under 12 girls’ team (Amalie Thomas, Sofia Johnson and Rosie Imm) claimed 7th place – just one place out of reach of an official team award. Other competitors included Sienna Mitchell, Daria Bogdanska and Cara Cunningham who formed the under 11 team.

The weather worsened overnight resulting in a frozen running track for the boys’ final. However, they still swam in the 50m pool and previous run scores from qualifying competitions were used. Year 5 pupil Tom Webb managed to claim 6th place in the under 10 age group of over 100 competitors. There was further success for Will Henry and Tom Ford who both finished in the top 40 in the U12 boys, an age group of over 120 competitors.

Tom Webb, aged 10 said: “I’ve been training really hard and was really pleased to get a personal best in my swimming knocking 3 seconds off my time! I enjoy taking part in competitions and hope I can do lots more in the future.”
