Children from five local primary schools were treated to an afternoon of sports at Taunton School recently.

The netball and football tournaments were organised entirely by the BTEC Sports and Exercise Year 13 students as part of their course.

116 children from Middlezoy, Hambridge, Nether Stowey, Parkfield and St George’s Catholic Primary Schools enjoyed an action-packed afternoon of sports, which was hosted and officiated by the capable sixth form students.

BTEC Sports and Exercise student Meg Conabeare said: “It was great to have the opportunity as a class to plan and deliver a sports event for local primary schools. We decided to run a netball and football tournament which was great experience for us to see what it is like to work in the real world and have our own independence. We put an emphasis on creating a welcoming, fun event with a competitive edge. The event was very successful and we thoroughly enjoyed taking the lead on it.”

Feedback from the primary schools has been unanimously positive, with staff commenting that “your young leaders were amazing and a real credit to the school” and “the children thoroughly enjoyed their time and have chatted about it all morning”.

Taunton School regularly hosts outreach events for local schools, including sports, science, drama and music.
