17 talented cricketers from across the Prep and Senior Schools will train with Somerset County Cricket Club during the winter period. Their selection follows last summer’s matches and success at trials during the half-term break.
As well as county selection, Ben Mason, AJ McKay, Kian Roberts and Joleigh Roberts have been selected onto the Elite Player Programme (EPP) and have been training at school during the lockdown period. Once restrictions are lifted, these sessions will be at the County Ground. Andrew Griffiths (Pathway Bowling Coach) and Matt Drakeley (Head of Performance Cricket) will also lead training sessions at school. Above this level, Ollie Heard has been selected for the Potential Somerset Players Programme (PSPP), which sits under the full academy programme. As with the EPP programme this will be a combination of school sessions and visits to the cricket ground.
Marcus Trescothick, Development Cricket Coach at Taunton School, who is presently in South Africa with the England team, says “This is excellent news for all the players and it provides them all with an opportunity to progress towards their ambitions of being professional cricketers. I enjoyed working with them before I left, I am hearing good reports of what they are doing in the school programme and will relish the opportunity to see them again on my return. Congratulations to them all!”
The selected cricketers are:
Prep School: Theo Winsor (U12), Oscar Coleman (U13), Jack Blackwell (U12/U13), Luca Gregory (U12), Peter McGivern (U12), Thomas Gendall (U12)
Under 14s: Thomas Ford, William Harvey, Ben Mason, AJ McKay, Kian Roberts and Cole Willoughby.
