Golfers at Taunton School have been involved in two excellent events this term. The first of these was the Rose Bowl competition, hosted by the Old Tauntonians (OTs) at Oake Manor Golf Club. Daniel W (Y11), Charlotte W (Y8) and Finley P (Y7) all took part in this competition and were playing alongside teachers and OTs in their respective groups. Finley took home the award for best score by a student on the day. Congratulations must also go to Mr Large and Andrew Ford (OT), who won the main event and will see their names engraved onto the coveted Rose Bowl trophy.
The Rose Bowl served as a fantastic warm up event for Daniel, Charlotte and Finley, all of whom also represented the school at this year’s West of England Public Schools Competition, held at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club. They were joined by William M (Y8) and Nathan R (Y12) to make up the team of five. Taunton were paired with Marlborough College in round one and, whilst our students were not particularly happy with their scores on the day, I was impressed by their resilience when faced with challenging links conditions. The majority of them had not played on a course like this before and it was an invaluable experience for all involved.
Day two saw Taunton face Blundells in a straight match play format. Finley led the team off with a superb drive down the middle of the fairway to set up a fantastic day, with far more forgiving conditions suiting those involved. Finley produced the performance of the day, taking an Upper Sixth 3 handicapper to the 16th hole, with no shots being given. A hugely impressive effort and one which exhibited the talent coming through the prep school. Special mentions must also go to Nathan and William, both winning their matches on day two. Overall, a narrow 3-2 loss but a performance which gives me confidence in the potential of our young golfers. We now look forward to a set of fixtures across the next few terms with local independent schools.Categories: News Preparatory Senior
