Being awarded a scholarship at school can be truly life changing – so it’s important to apply for a scholarship that’s right for you.

At Taunton School, we’re proud to recognise and nurture talent – whether you’re an ambitious academic all-rounder, a dedicated athlete or have a love for the performing arts. That’s why we offer a scholarships programme tailored to a range of subjects and age groups.

Through the programme, we aim to inspire passionate students and provide the opportunities to take their talents to the next level. With access to outstanding facilities on site and world-class teaching, we are dedicated to helping each individual achieve their potential.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about submitting an application and what to expect.

How do scholarships work?

Scholarships are awarded to recognise talent in different areas. They are given to students with exceptional artistic, academic or sporting gifts. Scholarships are awarded to students who are entering Year 7, Year 9 or Year 12 (Sixth Form) and will remain with them until they leave the school at the end of Upper Sixth.

If you’d like to be considered, you’ll need to submit an application stating your choice of scholarship along with supporting evidence. After your application has been reviewed, you may be invited to take part in a structured assessment (e.g. an exam or audition) and a short interview at the school, against which your application will be assessed.

Depending on your application and your family’s financial circumstances, we may also be able to offer you financial support through our means-tested assisted places.

What scholarships do Taunton School offer?

Taunton School offers four different scholarships categories: 11+, 13+, 16+ and the Evans Lombe award for students studying the International Baccalaureate. There are a range of subjects within which we recognise talent – from academic excellence to sport and the performing arts. A full list of subjects can be found on our scholarships page.

What is an all-rounder scholarship?

An all-rounder scholarship recognises students with talent across a breadth of subjects. This is awarded to high-achieving pupils who have an outstanding academic record, who may also have a particular gift and passion within one or two other disciplines. (This may include subjects like art, drama, music, computer science, design and technology, and/or sport.)

Can I apply for multiple scholarships?

You should make a single application per student, for the relevant age group. Within your application for the 11+, 13+ or 16+ scholarship, you can apply for a maximum of two subjects (or two subjects plus the all-rounder). For the Evans-Lombe award, you will be asked to supply your choices to study as part of the IB Diploma.

What do you need for a scholarship?

To apply, you’ll need to demonstrate your talent and enthusiasm for your chosen subject. The information you need to provide as part of your application will vary depending on the particular scholarship you’re applying for; for example, this could be details of your sporting achievements, academic certificates or achievements, or a creative portfolio of artwork.

For all applications we do ask for copies of your latest school reports and contact information of your current school so we can request a confidential reference. More information can be found on our application page.

Can I apply for a scholarship if I go to another school?

We welcome applications from all students who have a particular talent and passion – even if you are not currently a student at Taunton School. We also welcome applications from international students who would like to study here in the UK, as long as you have the required level of English for your chosen subject.

Should I apply for a scholarship?

Scholarships are designed to challenge our students and nurture their talents. The programme helps our students aim high, achieve their goals and reach their full potential. In return, we expect our scholars to be dedicated, hardworking and passionate about their chosen discipline – so if this describes you, then we’d definitely encourage you to apply.
