A BRIEF HISTORY OF SCHOLARSHIPS AT TAUNTON SCHOOL

Scholarships have long been a part of Taunton School’s commitment to excellence and opportunity and helping students find their exceptional. For generations, we have recognised and supported students with exceptional abilities in academics, the arts, and sport through our scholarship programme. Over time, its evolved to reflect our core values of ambition, inclusivity, and personal growth.

A significant milestone in the history of scholarships at Taunton School came when we started offering the Evans Lombe Award, made possible by philanthropist Ian Evans Lombe. This award supports students studying the International Baccalaureate and can offer up to 100% fee remission for qualifying applicants, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of exceptional potential. We are one of only a few schools in the South West to offer the International Baccalaureate, and it is a pleasure to be able to offer a scholarship in this area.

HOW DO SCHOLARSHIPS WORK?

Scholarships recognise exceptional talent and a culture of ambition in a range of different areas. They are available to students entering Year 7 (11+), Year 9 (13+), and Year 12 (16+).

To be considered, you’ll need to submit an application for your chosen scholarship category, along with supporting evidence. If shortlisted, you’ll be invited to attend a structured assessment (such as an exam, audition, or portfolio review) and a short interview.

Depending on your application and your family’s financial circumstances, you may also be eligible for additional support through our means-tested Assisted Places scheme.

WHAT SCHOLARSHIPS DOES TAUNTON SCHOOL OFFER?

We offer scholarships in the following categories:

• 11+ (Year 7 entry): Academic, Sport, Art, Music, Dance, Drama, and Design & Technology
• 13+ (Year 9 entry): Academic, Sport, Art, Music, Drama, and Design & Technology
• 16+ (Sixth Form entry): Academic, Sport, Art, Music, Drama, and Design & Technology
• Evans Lombe Award: For students studying the International Baccalaureate (IB), offering up to 100% fee remission for qualifying applicants

Candidates may apply for up to two scholarship categories per application.

WHAT IS AN ALL-ROUNDER SCHOLARSHIP?

An all-rounder scholarship recognises students who excel across a range of disciplines. These students typically have a strong academic record and demonstrate talent and enthusiasm in one or more additional areas such as sport, music, drama, art, or technology.

CAN I APPLY FOR MULTIPLE SCHOLARSHIPS?

Yes – within your application for the 11+, 13+, or 16+ scholarship, you can apply for up to two categories, or two plus the all-rounder. For the Evans Lombe Award, you’ll be asked to specify your IB subject choices.

WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR A SCHOLARSHIP?

You’ll need to demonstrate both talent and enthusiasm for your chosen subject(s). This might include:

• Academic certificates or reports
• Sporting achievements
• A creative portfolio (for art or design)
• Performance videos or music recordings

All applications must include your latest school reports and contact details for your current school, so we can request a confidential reference.

CAN I APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP IF I’M AT ANOTHER SCHOOL?

Absolutely. We welcome applications from students at other schools – both in the UK and internationally – as long as you meet the entry requirements and have the appropriate level of English for your chosen subject.

WHAT ARE ASSISTED PLACES?

Assisted Places are means-tested bursaries designed to support talented students who may not otherwise be able to afford a Taunton School education. These are available across all entry points and can be combined with a scholarship award. In some cases, up to 100% of fees may be covered.
