Year 7 at Taunton School: A Place to Belong and Thrive

For many families, Year 7 marks an important moment — a step into greater independence, a wider world of opportunity, and a school experience that begins to shape who a young person is becoming. At Taunton School, Year 7 is designed to be far more than a transition year. It is a place where pupils feel known, safe and supported, while beginning an exciting pathway filled with ambition, discovery and possibility.

Whether pupils have been at Taunton School since nursery or are joining us from another school, our aim is the same: that every child feels a strong sense of belonging and confidence, in an environment where they are encouraged to discover what they love — what we call ‘finding their exceptional.’

What is the culture like in Year 7 at Taunton School?

The culture of Year 7 at Taunton School is shaped by a simple but powerful mission:

Year 7 is a place of safety, trust, kindness and pride — online and offline.

This mission underpins everything we do. When pupils feel safe and supported, they are more willing to challenge themselves, take risks in learning and embrace new opportunities.

Our Year 7 team is made up of subject-specialist teachers from across the Prep and Senior Schools, many of whom continue to teach pupils through to the end of Year 8 and into the Senior School from Year 9 onward. This provides continuity, strong relationships and expert teaching at a key stage in a pupil’s development.

Pupils are respectful and kind to one another and are genuinely happy to come to School every day. We are proud that our Prep School is such a fun, vibrant place where pupils feel safe.

Is it easy to transition into Year 7 at Taunton School?

Joining Year 7 can feel like a big step. Pupils are navigating a new environment, a broader timetable and new relationships, while beginning to take greater ownership of their learning.

This transition is carefully supported by our dedicated teaching, pastoral and support staff members. Our 56-acre campus provides independence within safe, familiar grounds, and our timetable is deliberately balanced. Alongside strong academics, pupils have time for preparation, co-curricular activities and important pastoral downtime and socialising.

Small form groups sit at the heart of Year 7. They allow pupils to build trusting relationships with their peers and form tutor, with regular check-ins throughout the day ensuring pupils feel supported, listened to and guided at all times.

Will my child be supported academically?

Academic expectations in Year 7 are thorough and ambitious, while remaining reflective of individual progress. Pupils develop independence through a purposeful timetable that spans across the whole campus, with opportunities to explore a wide range of subjects and sporting disciplines.

Beyond the classroom, pupils benefit from Horizons — our co-curricular programme — which offers a vast breadth of opportunities for all pupils to discover new interests or hone existing ones. From sport and performance to creative and academic enrichment, Horizons encourages pupils to explore new interests and develop confidence in more than 60 clubs and activities, rising to 150+ in Year 9.

A key focus in Year 7 is helping pupils understand how they learn. Developing effective learning habits, resilience and self-awareness equips pupils for future success, both academically and personally.

The Prep School pathway through to the end of Year 8 prepares pupils exceptionally well for the next stage of their education at the Senior School, including those considering 13+ scholarship applications. Strong foundations, confident self-presentation and positive learning habits ensure pupils are well prepared for future opportunities.

Do you value student feedback?

Pupils providing feedback is a vital part of life in Year 7 and something we actively encourage. Each term, pupils share their views through surveys, lesson feedback and regular conversations with staff. This feedback is valued, shared appropriately and acted upon where it benefits pupils and the wider year group.

This culture of listening helps pupils develop confidence, self-advocacy and a sense of ownership, reinforcing that their voice matters and that they can shape their experience.

What is pastoral care like in Year 7 at Taunton School?

Pastoral care in Year 7 is layered, proactive and centred on open communication. Pupils are supported by form tutors, the Pastoral Head of Year, Heads of House, senior staff, peer leaders and independent listeners.

This joined-up approach allows concerns to be identified early, encouraging timely support and intervention. Pupils feel confident asking for help, knowing there is always someone looking out for them.

Can my child board in Year 7 at Taunton School?

Year 7 is one of our key entry points for boarders. Thone House, located in the heart of the Prep School, offers a warm, family-style environment where pupils feel safe, trusted and supported throughout the week.

Boarding routines are carefully structured, with academic activity on Saturdays and a varied programme of Sunday activities, including trips to explore Somerset. While boarders and day pupils follow different evening routines, they form one community, building friendships through lessons, sport, Horizons activities and form time.

We also love having our own therapy dog in Thone House, Ralph. Ralph is a three-year-old cocker spaniel who is always on hand to support boarders, regularly leads morning wake up, and even has his own slot on the rota! Whether someone is feeling homesick, overwhelmed, or simply in need of reassurance, Ralph helps create a true home-from-home for our boarding community.

A year that shapes confident, connected young people

By the end of Year 7, pupils have grown in confidence, maturity and self-awareness. They feel secure in their relationships, positive about learning and clear about their place within the Taunton School community.

Year 7 at Taunton School is not just a starting point – it is the foundation of a pathway where pupils feel safe to be themselves, supported to aim high, and inspired to find what truly makes them exceptional.
