Taunton School Day Houses: A Supportive Home for Every Student
Taunton School’s six Senior School day houses — Evans, Bevan, Goodland, Marshall, Besley and Jenkin — provide a welcoming, supportive home for our day students. Each day house offers personalised pastoral care, space to relax and study, and a vibrant community where every student feels known and valued. From daily check-ins with tutors to an exciting programme of co-curricular activities, our day houses play a central role in student wellbeing and success.

Building Trust in Taunton School’s Day Houses
Trust is at the heart of each Taunton School day house. Staff always aim to be present and available, whether during a busy lunch break or at the quiet end of the day. Small check-ins often matter most: “How was that test?” or “You didn’t seem yourself today.” These conversations help students feel secure, listened to and confident to talk about worries or mistakes. House staff work closely as a team to ensure someone is always there when needed.
A Rich and Fun Community for Taunton School Day Students
We limit device use in our day houses to encourage real connection and there is never any shortage of activity. Students enjoy wide-ranging co-curricular options with more than 150 to choose from, whether it’s sport, music, Warhammer, drama, or something completely new. Each day house offers fun trips and other events throughout the year, including surfing, sailing, shopping trips and meals out — all great opportunities for friendships and house spirit to grow.

Celebrating Success in Our Day Houses
We are proud to celebrate both standout achievements and everyday victories in our day houses just like we do in our boarding houses. Staff deliberately recognise effort, kindness, resilience and personal growth — the student who keeps going after a setback or supports a friend deserves praise just as much as someone winning a competition. These “little wins” help build long-term confidence.

Staff as Role Models Shaping Students’ Experiences
Students learn from what adults do as much as what they say. House staff model our values of humility, kindness and engagement by being calm, fair and honest, even when things are challenging. This helps students understand and live the school’s values.
Creating Homely Spaces in Our Day Houses
Each day house provides a warm, practical space where students can relax, chat, study and recharge. Comfy seating, table tennis, games, books, and quiet corners all help create a home-from-home atmosphere. Students can return during the day to store belongings, make tea and toast, and reset before heading back to lessons.
Integration Across Taunton School
Day and boarding students integrate every day in sports, academic lessons, drama productions, music performances and more. Students also take part in a range of exciting house competitions each year ranging from sport and science to debating, singing (a particular highlight!), music video creation and gingerbread house making. These events bring students across year groups together and create memorable moments.
Day Houses Offer a Strong Pastoral Support System
Our house system provides outstanding pastoral care at all times. Staff encourage students to stretch themselves, try new things and take responsibility, offering the message: “This is difficult, but we know you can do it.” When care, challenge and consistency combine, students feel safe to take risks and are proud of who they are becoming.
A Home-from-Home for Our Day Students
Taunton School day houses are vibrant places full of conversation, encouragement and shared pride. They provide the stability students need to settle into academic routines and the community that supports them through successes and setbacks. Above all, they are places where everyone strives to be excellent to one another, to celebrate each other’s achievements, and to truly find their exceptional.
