Richard Giles

We are sorry to share the sad news that Richard Giles (TS, 1967-1995) passed away on the 13th April 2026.

Richard joined Taunton in 1967, arriving via Blundell’s, Balliol College, Oxford, and Lord Wandsworth College. Over his 28 years of dedicated service, he played a central role in the teaching of Classics and Ancient History, organising Classics Days, reading competitions, and countless trips to Oxford, Cambridge, London and Bath.

Richard’s retirement notice in the Tauntonian reflected, “From his very first term, Richard threw himself into school life. He founded the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme at Taunton and went on to support it tirelessly, eventually becoming Somerset Chairman of the DofE. He also served as Housemaster of School House, Chairman of the Sixth Form Centre and Press Officer for the school. Richard had a deep and sincere involvement in the life of the school’s Chapel, always preparing services that were thoughtful, hopeful and uplifting.”

Richard’s contribution to Taunton School was profound and he will be remembered with great warmth.
