Many current and prospective parents will no doubt be aware of the Government’s 29/07/2024 announcement relating to VAT on school fees.
Fees at Taunton School
Taunton School's
Statement on VAT
Taunton School has always committed to sharing the financial cost of VAT on fees with parents, balancing the quality of the education we provide with affordability.
We have committed to keeping any overall increase in costs to parents, as a result of this new policy, below 10%, phased over more than one academic year.
These are extremely challenging times for the independent school sector but we are well placed to adapt and thrive. We are confident that in sharing the impact fairly between the school and parents we will continue to achieve the right balance between an exceptional quality of education and affordability.
In brief, the Government has confirmed the following as its position:
- VAT at 20% will be applied to all fees payable from 01/01/2025. Nursery education is exempt.
- Any fees paid from 29/07/2024 pertaining to the term starting in January 2025 and onwards will be subject to VAT.
- VAT will be applied to educational services outside the academic curriculum such as performing arts lessons and sports clubs which attract additional charges.
- The cost of boarding will be subject to the VAT charge.
- Some provision will be exempt: transport to and from school; books; before and after school childcare; some school meals.
- VAT will be added to fees for all pupils including those with Special Educational Needs, those with EHCPs (Education Health and Care Plans), and those from military and diplomatic families. Local Education Authorities will be able to claim back from the Government the VAT added to the fees of children with EHCPs.
- Schools with charitable status, as is the case with Taunton School, will cease to benefit from the 80% Business Rate Relief, with effect from 01/04/2025.

See schedule on the button below.
- Do you accept Childcare Vouchers?
Yes, we accept Childcare Vouchers. To see if you are eligible for Tax Free Childcare please click here. Some employers include Childcare Vouchers as part of the remuneration package offered to their employees. These vouchers can be used against childcare provision such as nursery and holiday club sessions.
Please note that these methods of payment can be used in conjunction with the Early Years Funding.
Tax free childcare is a popular form of payment for Nursery and Pre Prep fees up to the point when your child is aged 5 or over at the start of an academic term. However, due to HMRC restrictions and the practicalities of administration, once the pupil is aged 5 at the start of an academic term then childcare vouchers can only be used for Holiday club.
The School accepts vouchers from a number of providers, please contact the Finance Department on 01823 703140 for account details.
- Do you accept Early Years Funding?
In order that our families are able to access our provision we have agreed to adopt and work in Partnership with the Somerset Code of Practice for Early Years.
The county of Somerset offers a maximum of 570 hours per year of Early Years Entitlement (EYE) for all children aged 9months to 5 years. There are a further 570 hours available to three and four year olds for qualifying families. These can be accessed flexibly in our setting throughout 51 weeks of the year.
There is no minimum entitlement per day but the maximum hours per week that may be claimed is 15. For those families of 3 and 4 year olds qualifying for the additional entitlement, the maximum amount of hours which can be claimed each week is 30.
This funding reflects the quality of our purpose-built facilities, highly qualified staff and inclusive programme. We have swimming teachers, specialist music staff, language teachers, specialist facilities for the children to use and a member of staff qualified at Level 6 in all EYFS rooms.
Somerset County Council provides lots of information and guidance to help you make an informed choice. More information is available online on www.somersetchoices.org.uk or by calling 0300 1232224.
We also have information leaflets. Please contact our Nursery Admissions Administrator on 01823 703302 or tppsadmissions@tauntonschool.co.uk for a copy.
