Long Distance Swimming - we swim the Channel

The Long-Distance Swimming Club is truly unique, a whole school club that operates throughout the year, with students and staff of all ages training alongside each other in the school pools and then, as the weather improves, out into the coastal waters, of the Southwest. Students join in Year 7, but some of our younger swimmers join earlier with the goal of swimming the English Channel as part of a relay team in Year 7 and 8. We currently have 55 students and 6 staff who have completed this awe-inspiring challenge with another 13 pupils preparing to attempt a crossing this summer.

All our swimmers complete a plethora of Southwest swimming challenges, such as the St Michael’s Mount Swim (2.4km), Burgh Island (1.4km) and Plymouth Breakwater (4km). Our swimmers also enjoy the opportunity to participate in outstanding overseas opportunities, including our biennial swim camp to the Greek Islands of Lefkada where students swim 7km per day around the smaller satellite islands of The Ionian Sea, culminating in a long crossing to mainland Greece.

The ethos of the club is about achieving great things together, as a team. Their coach believes that confidence is built, not born and that strong teams build each other up. Together this club does thus, and all become so!
