Taunton School has a long and proud history of supporting military families.

Military families have been part of Taunton School for many years and contribute greatly to our broad and diverse community. We’re down to earth, and understanding of your specific circumstances, ensuring we give you the tailored support you need.

Our strong pastoral support system ensures our military pupils settle in quickly. We have a dedicated team of experienced house staff, including house parents and house tutors, who are always on hand to advise and support our close-knit boarding community.

A School for Military Families

As a full seven-day-a-week boarding school, we understand the nuances of military life and have extensive experience looking after children from a military background. Your child will join a community of down to earth boarders and will benefit from our supportive family of day pupils.

We recognise that communication is especially important and appreciate the flexibility needed for you to stay in contact with your child.

Our academic and boarding provision for all pupils is on our all-inclusive campus. Siblings can easily visit each other to maintain strong family ties and you can rely on the consistency of one school location until the end of Sixth Form.

A Home From Home Boarding Experience

For military families, boarding at Taunton School offers children invaluable stability, and the opportunity to forge lifelong friendships. We know military life can involve regular upheaval, which is why we have created a nurturing, supportive, and flexible home environment.

Our strong pastoral system ensures that children settle quickly and for those that need a little extra support, our experienced team are there to support, ensuring your child adjusts to boarding life.

  • Prep boarding for military families

We find that children of military families are often well-rounded and independent, which is why they tend to excel in boarding.

We also recognise that deployment is not always planned and often last minute, which is why boarding is a great option for you and your child. Boarding offers continuity and security, as well as an undisrupted education.

The warm, friendly, and caring atmosphere of Thone House offers a great home from home environment where children flourish and develop their sense of independence, whilst forming amazing friendships with their peers.

With a rich and fulfilling programme of evening and weekend entertainment and activities to enjoy, your child’s time as a boarder will be fun packed and rewarding.

For those families not claiming CEA we do offer a 15% military discount and at Thone House, we offer weekly, and flexible boarding (space permitting) for those families who need flexibility.

Taunton Prep School caters for military families aged 7 – 13. Our Head of Prep Boarding School, Kath Wells, is from a military family background and is sympathetic to the challenges that military families face.

Taunton school is home to the largest combined cadet force (CCF) provision in the southwest

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) forms an integral part of the co-curricular programme at Taunton School. All students join the CCF as a compulsory activity in Year 10, and many stay on to train to become Non-Commissioned Officers during their Sixth Form years. Students are all given the choice of joining one of two sections: Royal Navy and Army.

Having elected to join one of the two sections, cadets will follow a training programme tailored toward that section’s military requirements. For example, the Royal Navy learn maritime skills like boating and navigation, and the Army concentrate on Weapon Training and Field Craft.

The primary aim of the CCF is to enable students to develop qualities of leadership that will benefit them in adult life. CCF activities are encouraged and heavily sponsored by the MoD. This means that all CCF cadets can apply to undertake courses such as sailing, climbing, scuba diving and leadership – all of which award nationally recognised qualifications. Most of these courses are free of charge.

Funding for military families – continuity of education allowance (CEA)

We believe that every child should benefit from an exceptional education, which is why we offer significant financial support for military families in receipt of CEA. The Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) aims to provide support for military families to give their children a chance at an excellent, grounded education.

A consistent education is important to us, and our family of schools are based on one site, meaning siblings of different ages will be able to see each on a daily basis.

We work hard to minimise any extras, our fees include all tuition, delicious and nutritious meals cooked onsite by our own chefs, snacks, laundry, books, internet access and weekend trips. In fact, your child will only need a small amount of pocket money.

For those families not claiming CEA we offer a 15% military discount.
