Our Location

Taunton School’s location provides students with the perfect combination of town and country. On the outskirts of the Somerset market town of Taunton, the school is surrounded by some of England’s most beautiful countryside. Against this backdrop, the school’s impressive 56-acre site creates an environment where students have space to thrive not just academically, but also socially and emotionally.

Our Facilities

Taunton School’s historic 19th Century clock tower and main school building provide an imposing backdrop to more recent state-of-the-art developments: a £4million Dining Hall, opened by Princess Anne, brings students together from across our campus for healthy, sociable mealtimes and a new Sixth-Form Centre and Library provide stimulating spaces for our older students to work and mingle.

Sports facilities include several pitches – traditional and all-weather – for rugby, cricket, and hockey. Sports halls provide year-round indoor cricket practice areas and there are two swimming pools, a gymnasium, a climbing wall, tennis, and squash courts as well as a fitness suite.

There are specialist Art, Music, and Drama studios as well as a dedicated Science block.

A Design and Technology department gives students across the school, access to the latest 3D printers, laser cutters and computer-aided design software.

The Music School provides students with practice rooms and rehearsal spaces as well as the latest music software and recording equipment. Regular stage productions and concerts take place in our fully equipped 220-seater Theatre. An additional drama hall and specialist studios enable students to fully engage with Taunton School’s wealth of opportunities across the Performing Arts.

We recognise that our students need time to relax and unwind. To that end, we created an eco-friendly, pedestrianised hub.

Dubbed the Green Heart of the school, this outdoor haven away from the classroom is an open-air social space linking together the main components of the Taunton School campus: the boarding houses, teaching blocks, Chapel, the Dining Hall – and the school’s Health Centre.

Our Health Centre is open for students across our campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the team of 17 nurses and healthcare professionals providing physical and emotional support when our students need it.

Dining Facilities

Providing great sustenance throughout the day for our children is hugely important to ensure they are healthy, focused and energised for their busy life at Taunton School and that is fulfilled by our fantastic catering team.

Our highly qualified and experienced catering staff prepare delicious home-cooked meals for all tastes and dietary requirements. We are one of the only schools in the region that doesn’t outsource its catering.

All meat, vegetables and dairy are sourced locally. Students have a tasty choice of healthy and nutritious meal and snack options for breakfast, lunch, and tea, including cooked and continental breakfasts and a choice of cereals to start the day. All meals are served in our dining rooms. Homemade treats and plenty of fresh, seasonal fruit are available each day. There is no chance of going hungry.

School Shop & Uniform Shop

We are home to two onsite shops.

‘Griffins’ is our one stop shop for essentials for boarders and students including hot and cold on the go food.

We have a Uniform Shop supplying all the necessary clothing, sports kit and more, for students across all schools. We have a thriving ‘Nearly New’ section, offering quality used uniform and a resale service for surplus uniform, sold for a percentage of the sales.

The Health Centre

At the Health Centre we endeavour to identify and respond to the health needs of all Taunton School pupils from nursery-age into the Sixth Form.

We offer a holistic provision to support physical, emotional, and social needs via a 24-hour-a-day, 7-days-a-week service. Our committed and highly skilled team consists of a range of professionals, including eight qualified nurses, a health care assistant, three matrons, two mental health nurses, a chartered physiotherapist, and a qualified counsellor. The team is overseen by a paediatric nurse with extensive school experience, and she works in partnership with our school doctors who run a GP clinic 4 days a week.

Located in the heart of the school, the Health Centre is fully accessible to all students and each day is a hive of activity.

We also support staff employed by the school by advising on their health and wellbeing when needed. We aim to deliver the best care and service to all by signposting them to relevant services or getting support from the pastoral team. We pride ourselves on a multidisciplinary mental health team that aims to provide support and early interventions for our pupils.

Some responsibilities of our experienced nurses include caring for unwell and injured pupils, supporting children with chronic illnesses, health screening, administering medication and vaccinations. We also work closely with the teaching staff to deliver elements of the PSHEE education, and we work very closely with safeguarding and pastoral leads to deliver solution-based approaches for pupils. As a team we strive to encourage and support pupils to thrive in a way that is autonomous and empowering and will allow them to become resilient, capable children who can succeed in a global community.
