Curriculum

The Taunton School International Middle School curriculum is carefully designed to provide the best possible start to a British boarding school education over the age range of 8-14. 

Depending on the student’s age and level of English, we provide two highly academic programmes:

Preparation for entry into a Preparatory School

  • Students who are between 8 – 11 years old at the start of the academic year
  • 40% of the curriculum is dedicated to intensive English language development
  • Students follow the Taunton Preparatory School curriculum at a level and pace dependent on the student’s level of English

Preparation for entry onto a GCSE course

  • Students who are between the ages of 12 and 14 years old at the start of the academic year
  • 40% of the curriculum is dedicated to intensive English language development
  • Students follow a pre-GCSE course carefully designed in conjunction with subject leaders at Taunton Senior School to ensure the smooth transition of students onto the GCSE courses the following academic year.

 

The key features of our outstanding academic provision are as follows:

  • Maximum class size of 10
  • Places are limited to 60 per year, allowing us to provide individual support for all our students
  • Highly qualified and specialist teachers, all of whom are trained in teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL)
  • Thorough and effective student tracking and monitoring of progress
  • Weekly support from a dedicated Tutor who supports their tutee’s welfare, both academically and pastorally
  • A huge amount of online support available via the school intranet
  • Access to outstanding academic facilities: Science labs, ICT suites, library and modern classrooms
  • Weekly PSHEE lessons dealing with many social and cultural issues as well as providing the students with those all-important study skills
  • A disciplined, structured and supportive environment in which all students can flourish
  • A wide and varied co-curricular programme in the evenings and at weekends, with over 100 clubs and societies to take part in
  • Coaching in a wide variety of sports including rugby, hockey, netball, tennis, football, basketball, athletics, cricket, swimming, badminton, squash and volleyball
  • Outstanding pastoral care with a ratio of 1 member of staff to every 3 students
  • 24-hour medical care with our own dedicated Health Centre
  • Consistently outstanding results with over 90% of students successfully transferring into mainstream British schools after one year

As well as English, other subjects studied include Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, ICT, Art, Music, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE), Physical Education and Games.
