Young Learners Programme:
Ages 7 – 13 (Years 3 – 8)

For our Young International Learners, there are 2 academic pathways available:

Academic pathway option 1

Young International Learners with very limited or low levels of English (CEFR ≤ B1; IELTS < 5.0) first start their education at our International Middle School (TSIMS) where they receive intensive English coaching as well as studying a broad range of other academic subjects, including Maths, Science, Geography, History, Music, ICT, Art and Games/PE.

Without the necessary English skills, studying at a top UK independent school can be extremely daunting for any young learner. This is why at TSIMS, we employ specialist teachers to deliver a varied curriculum in small class sizes (average 8 students/class) with subject-specific vocabulary development at the heart of what we do.

Throughout their time at TSIMS, our young international learners integrate with the Prep School students so that when they transfer to the Prep School (usually within one academic year) it is much easier to settle as they already have many friends, and they are familiar with their surroundings.

Academic Pathway option 2

Young International Learners with higher levels of English (CEFR > B1; IELTS ≥ 5.0) will be based at the Prep School and study a broad curriculum in preparation for their move on to the Senior School at age 13.

Subjects include: English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Music, ICT, Art, Modern Foreign Languages, Religious Studies, and Games/PE.

Life for Young Learners at Taunton School

All our Young International Learners are supported in their studies by a dedicated tutor, whom they meet several times each week to check on progress, set targets and to receive guidance on how to maximise their academic potential.

Education does not stop in the classroom and every young international learner is able to take advantage of the huge number of extra-curricular clubs and activities available throughout the week as well as trips and outings at the weekend.

Boarding for Young International Learners

Particularly for our younger students it is crucial they feel safe, happy and at ease in their new environment and that is why at Taunton School, we work extremely hard to create that all-important home-from-home feeling in our boarding houses. Our House Parents and boarding staff are well-versed in welcoming international students to the school and our boarders soon feel at home, making new friends with students from the UK and all over the world. Students studying at the International Middle School board in The Grange and students studying at the Prep School board in Thone House.

All of our boarders have full access to the wonderful facilities on our 56-acre campus in the evenings and at weekends. Whether they enjoy sport, performing and creative arts or any number of other hobbies and interests, there is something for everyone, allowing our Young International Learners to learn something new and to broaden their horizons.
