Library Lovers' Month

Posted: 23rd February 2018

“A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people. It is a never failing spring in the desert.” – Andrew Carnegie

There seems to be a day or a week or a month for everything these days. World Book Day is coming up on March 1st but we have to wait for July 7th for World Chocolate Day, and my other favourite, International Talk Like a Pirate Day, isn’t until September 19th.
You will have your own top choices – World Teachers’ Day in October, perhaps, or National Vegetarian Week in May, or National Family Caregivers’ Month in November.

I hope you will all join me, however, in taking some time in February to love your libraries. We are lucky at Taunton School to have two lovely libraries full of excellent resources run by committed staff, and Taunton town centre boasts a large and welcoming library, so we are spoiled for choice. A library is one of the most fabulous ideas ever – a collection of material available for people to borrow, use and enjoy, and then return for others to benefit.

Great philanthropists like Andrew Carnegie poured their wealth into public libraries for a reason. Giving everyone free access to superb literature and quality information offers an equality of opportunity rarely seen elsewhere.

Using your school libraries well allows you to develop research skills that will be crucial at university and in the world of work, and to try a wide variety of reading which develops your brain and expands your mind.

What’s not to love?
