Army Scholarship and Sandhurst Place for Taunton School Pupil

Thursday, August 2, 2018

Taunton School pupil Alex Kitchen has been awarded a prestigious Army scholarship for Sixth Form and University and a secured place at Sandhurst – one of only around 100 in the country.

The 17-year-old had to prove himself amongst thousands of applicants through a rigorous selection process involving physical and mental activities, leadership tasks, essay writing, interviews and medicals.

During his university studies he will also take part in the University Officers’ Training Corps. He will progress onto Sandhurst for 44 weeks where he will learn leadership and military skills.

Alex, who is from Creech St Michael, Taunton, and joined Taunton Prep School in Year 5 will then do at least four years’ Army service.

He is about to embark on his Upper Sixth year at Taunton School where he is studying A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics.

Alex said: “This is absolutely fantastic and I am really excited. I was attracted to apply mainly because of the structure of the career and family tradition. Having a defined career path and job security when I have finished university is really important. I am hoping to study Physics or Chemistry at degree level and I have looked at Cambridge, Imperial or UCL.”

He added that Taunton School’s co-curricular programme and several teachers with military experience had assisted him in his application. “Being encouraged to try a little bit of everything including CCF, debating, rugby and music has given me a breadth of knowledge, skills and interests which helped me in the process,” he said.
