A stunning performance of Les Misérables
Taunton School students performed in the stunning production of Les Misérables on 5th, 6th and 7th December.
Fifty-seven student performers, supported by a live orchestra and the School Community Choir, delivered show of epic proportion. The sold-out audiences were brought to their feet each time the cast delivered the grand finale “One Day More” as they gave a well-earned standing ovation.
Many of the cast had never been involved in a musical and all had to balance their rehearsing with their school, sport and societal commitments.
Despite this, together they delivered a show worthy of comparisons to West End theatre productions.
Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a truly timeless testament to the survival and triumph of the human spirit and one we were so proud to present performed by the amazing young people and community choir of Taunton School.
Assistant Director of Music, Fiona Cracknell, reflects on the process: "It is a show of epic proportions and it has been a real privilege for Mark and I to take these committed performers on such a journey. We have all been immensely challenged during the short rehearsal period and the greatest applause is undoubtedly reserved for the amazingly talented cast.
"In 2008 Mark and I, along with then Director Meryl Smart, brought Les Misérables to the school for the first time. In 2018 we have been truly thrilled to bring the show back for our 10th Anniversary Performance on a specially constructed stage in a very special production. A project on this scale is a huge undertaking which would not be possible without the support and ambition of the Headmaster and the school community as a whole.
"Of the 57 amazing young performers that embarked on this incredible adventure with us, many had never been involved in a musical or had many other things going on in their life at the time. They worked long hours over evenings and weekends, committing everything they had to deliver a performance of a lifetime that none of us involved will ever forget. These students are the true embodiment of an amazing human spirit and we are bursting with pride for each and every one of them.
"Mark and I have a terrible habit of being more ambitious than our blood pressure can cope with at times, and while I think we may sleep for most of the festive season, we know we have the best jobs in the world, continually dreaming the dream with Taunton School, and want to thank everyone involved for all your support in making this happen."
