A weekend of open water swimming success for Taunton School pupils

Posted: 2nd July 2018

Students and staff from Taunton School participated in The Henley Swim and Clevedon Long Swim events this weekend.

At Henley, 13 pupils from Year 9 -13 and four staff raced on the course of the legendary Henley Royal Regatta in the early hours of Sunday morning. 13-year-old Ollie Heard was the fastest swimmer from Taunton School coming 2nd in the Henley Classic adult category ahead of several hundred other entrants. Skye McLaughlin, also aged 13, was 2nd in the Under 17 female category and 6th in the adult category.

Ten students and four staff took part in the Clevedon Long Swim which sees competitors swim a mile around Layde Bay, under the pier and finishing on Clevedon Beach. For many this was their first open water swim. Skyla Coate (15) finished in the top ten. Amalie Thomas (12), Emily Lawton (15) and Toby Lewis (12) finished in the top twenty. Sienna Mitchel was the youngest competitor at only ten years of age.

Skyla Coate, Emma Hounslow and Emily Lawton – who are mentoring the Prep School swimmers in preparation for the school’s Channel Swim in 2019 – swam both events.
