First class cricketers coach Taunton School pupils

Posted: 20th March 2018

Pupils at Taunton School have recently been fortunate enough to receive expert coaching from first class cricketers, Max Waller, Roelof Van de Merwe and county youth coach Andrew Skidmore.

The professional trio have been at Taunton School under the watchful eye of Director of Cricket and ECB Mentor Pete Sanderson, in order to complete their ECB Level 3 Coaching qualifications, whilst aspiring cricketers have been soaking up their advice and expertise. Taunton School pupils were given coaching in batting, bowling, wicketkeeping and fielding. Mr Sanderson said, “Max, Roelof and Andrew have benefitted from working with the enthusiastic and talented pupils across all ages. In turn, our pupils have had the chance to learn key skills as well as being able to ask about the approach professional players have to practice. The accessibility and close proximity of classroom, gym and the new net system in the sports hall allowed the candidates to deliver sessions in an interchangeable way.”

Year 10 pupil Adam Small, who is also Devon’s county wicketkeeper and batter, commented “It was a great opportunity to do extra keeping work and the insight I got, particularly from two professional spinners, was of great value and challenged my game.”

Max Waller added “The brilliant assistance of Pete Sanderson as a mentor and the access to facilities and ability to work with players at Taunton School has helped me to develop invaluable skills as a coach.”
