17-year-old student Cerys Lee competed in the Somerset School’s Combined Events Championships last weekend coming top of the Somerset leaderboard and claiming the County Champion title.

Cerys, who is in the lower sixth and the girls’ captain competed in the athletics event at Millfield, which was also open to athletes from all over the country. She finished her heptathlon event with 4,319 points and personal bests in 3 of the 7 events. She was the 1st Somerset athlete, and 7th overall Senior Girl. Frank Tickner, Head of Athletics at Taunton School commented: “It was an impressive performance, especially given the cold conditions. Cerys should be extremely proud.”

In another athletics meet in Yeovil last weekend, pupils from Taunton School were competing in the grey, chilly weather for the coveted “Lutra Shield” which is awarded to the highest scoring team of the weekend. The Taunton School athletes claimed an impressive third place, only a few points adrift of Millfield in second, and Dauntsey’s in first.

There were some outstanding performances from all students including boy’s captain Matt Alvarez, who won the 100m (10.97 seconds) and 200m (22.86 seconds), then raced in both 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

Frank Tickner added: “All of the students who competed should be delighted with their performances. They contributed a huge amount and their hard work and training really paid off. It was a great start to the athletics season.”
