Year 13 student Cerys Lee has gained a prestigious scholarship to Queens University of Charlotte in America to study Psychology.

18-year-old Cerys, who is studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme at Taunton School, decided to apply to the North Carolina University after discovering its excellent athletics provision. She managed to secure a Combined Scholarship for Academic and Track and Field at the Division II University in the United States.

Cerys has been the captain of the school athletics team for two years, specialising in the heptathlon and long jump in particular. She says: “I decided to join Taunton School in the sixth form because I wanted to study the IB and also progress as an athlete. I train at Taunton Athletics Club with Steve Shaw, but I’ve also had vital support at school from my strength and conditioning coach Mr Thompson and also from Miss Mortimer which I’m very thankful for. I’ve just finished my IB and I’m really hoping to get a high grade.”

Cerys regularly tops the leaderboard at athletics competitions. She recently captained her school team at the Somerset Athletics Championships achieving gold herself in three events. The Taunton School athletes achieved 19 podium spots across 23 events.

She added: “I’m looking forward to moving to America in August. My career aspiration is to become a Clinical Psychologist but I’m looking forward to continuing with athletics and will see where that takes me.”

Hayley Mortimer, Director of Co-Curricular at Taunton School said: “Cerys is exceptionally talented and has fully embraced the opportunities at Taunton School. She really deserves this scholarship and I’ve no doubt she will excel in all that she does.”
