Outdoor Education

Fun and adventure outside of the classroom rarely feels like education, and can leave a great lasting impression. That’s why we fully encourage utilising the great outdoors to experience and enjoy new activities and challenges. From making the most of the school’s extensive outdoor facilities and the climbing wall, to exploring the local area and beyond, our activities and opportunities are designed to develop great leadership skills and highlight the benefits of working as a team. These are essential skills that will serve students well during their continuing educational journey and their future careers.

Students can achieve their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, which delivers training in expedition skills. Building on these skills, we also enter the Ten Tors Challenge.  At the weekends, the school organises surfing and mountain biking trips and runs a weekly climbing club.

Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

All students join the CCF as a compulsory activity in Year 10, and many stay on to train to become NCO during their Sixth Form years. Students are all given the choice of joining one of three sections: Royal Navy or Army.

The primary aim of the CCF is to enable students to develop qualities of Leadership that will be of benefit in adult life. CCF activities are encouraged and heavily sponsored by the MoD. This means that all CCF cadets can apply to undertake courses such as sailing, climbing, scuba diving and leadership, all of which award nationally recognised qualifications. Most of these courses are free of charge!

Having elected to join one of the three sections, cadets will follow a training program tailored toward that Section’s military requirements. As examples: the RN learn maritime skills like boating and navigation, the Army concentrate on Weapon Training and Field Craft learn about Aeronautics and have opportunities to fly.
