Rugby is played throughout the school and we are in a position of being able to put out at least two teams at every age group from U14 – U18 and play against some of the strongest playing schools in the South West.
We expect pupils and students to set extremely high standards through sport and rugby provides them with the perfect vehicle to do this. We hope that all the players come away with the self satisfaction of knowing that they have enjoyed the experience and made a group of friends that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. It is a sport that requires control, trust and loyalty and we expect all our players to demonstrate this on and off the field.
We regularly put out nine teams in a block on a Saturday fixture list. We have access to six rugby pitches and have a good team of technically experienced coaches who are all enthusiasts and who want the boys to share their passion for this great game.
Rugby takes place throughout the year and we work on a ten month cycle. Practices occur three to four times a week during the rugby season, including video analysis, and twice a week during the off-season. Pupils train for an hour and a half twice a week during their games programme:
- Tuesday sessions are for each age group where rugby players work on fitness, technical skills and games.
- Thursdays are team squad based sessions where Forwards practice scrums and lineouts while Backs work on their moves. They then finish altogether to prepare Saturday fixtures.
- We offer extra sessions with our Performance Programme and 1:1 specific skill or positional sessions.
During Summer term, August and early September the pre-season programme is in place to prepare the players for a strong and challenging fixture list incorporating some of the strongest schools in the South West if not the Country.
We have a very competitive fixtures list in the South West from local schools to regional schools. Each team plays 11 challenging matches on Saturday during the first term. We also enter the U15 and U18 Natwest Cup national schools competitions.
We play 7’s rugby during the Spring Term alongside the Boys’ Hockey season to improve our skills and fitness. Each age group competes in the West of England Rugby 7’s Schools Competition and in different local and regional tournaments, before entering to the National Rosslyn Park 7’s.
We are supporters of Taunton Rugby Club and North Petherton where our Director of Rugby carries out coaching as we have a number of students and staff representing their teams.
We are fully supportive of our large number of players involved with Premiership Academies. We support Exeter Chiefs, Bath and Bristol with our player development and offer performance profiling to help our pupils identify strengths and weaknesses to achieve their goals.
Previous tours have included trips to the South of France (Pre-season Rugby), South Africa and Zimbabwe and Australia.
