Looking back on our history
Our story begins back in 1847, when Taunton School was first founded as an all-boys independent school for non-conformists. In 1870, we moved to Staplegrove Road – where we have remained to this very day. Here, you can still see our original neo-gothic main building and iconic clock tower that has stood tall in Taunton’s skyline for over a century.
Throughout our history, we’ve always been proudly pioneering. Over the course of 175 years, we’ve transformed as a school; we’ve become co-educational after merging with Weirfield School in 1971; we’ve established our Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep schools to offer a seamless educational journey from ages 0-18; and in 1996, we became the first independent school in the UK to open an international school on site.
Today, we pride ourselves on providing a contemporary education from the heart of Taunton, with the same trailblazing spirit of our founders.
