175 years of Taunton School

We’ve come a long way since we were founded in 1847 and we’re proud of all that we’ve achieved.

As we celebrate 175 years of Taunton School, we look back on some of the key milestones that make up our history and celebrate all corners of our community. Take a look at our short video to find out more about our history, community and ethos as a school, as we look forward to the next 175 years in our journey.

Looking back on our history

Our story begins back in 1847, when Taunton School was first founded as an all-boys independent school for non-conformists. In 1870, we moved to Staplegrove Road – where we have remained to this very day. Here, you can still see our original neo-gothic main building and iconic clock tower that has stood tall in Taunton’s skyline for over a century.

Throughout our history, we’ve always been proudly pioneering. Over the course of 175 years, we’ve transformed as a school; we’ve become co-educational after merging with Weirfield School in 1971; we’ve established our Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep schools to offer a seamless educational journey from ages 0-18; and in 1996, we became the first independent school in the UK to open an international school on site.

Today, we pride ourselves on providing a contemporary education from the heart of Taunton, with the same trailblazing spirit of our founders.

Looking to the future

Although we are rooted in tradition and experience, we are forward-thinking and full of ambition for the next 175 years in our journey.

As a leading independent school, we have our sights set firmly on the future. This is reflected in our transformational campus development plans that promise to deliver a school that’s fit for our community today, as well as the students of tomorrow.

These ambitions are already visible through our state-of-the-art dining hall that was opened by HRH The Princess Royal in 2020 and, more recently, our modern Sixth Form centre and library that was unveiled earlier this year.
