Taunton School Main Building at Dusk

The Headmaster's view on the benefits of boarding

Posted: 1st December 2017

In Assembly last Monday, I took the opportunity to share with the children what a great weekend the boarders had enjoyed. I am delighted that at TPS we have a core of weekly and full-time boarders living in the heart of the school and that we are able to offer the boarding experience to all of our pupils, even if it is just for one night of flexi-boarding at some point in the year. Staying for a night or two away from home is a life skill, developing independence and sociability as well as being great fun, and I can think of no better way of preparing for school residential trips than spending a night in Thone. It can also, on occasion, be a very pragmatic way of solving logistical issues, saving hours of driving when arrangements have become busy.

During the last week, the boarders and the staff have had tremendous fun in Thone playing the new Taunton Monopoly, putting the Christmas decorations up, taking part in quizzes, enjoying their tuck treats and enjoying ‘Kahoot Chaos!’ On Sunday, the boys and girls visited the Fleet Air Arm museum, dressing up as pilots and taking part in simulated take-offs in the cockpit of Phantom fighter jets. If you (or your child!) would like further information on how to book into Thone for a night of flexi-boarding, please do ask in the School Office.

The main attraction in Monday’s assembly, however, was a delightfully entertaining canter on stage through the life of Henry VIII and his many wives. Congratulations to Miss Page and her class for giving us an assembly of such high quality. As our pupils move up through the school, it is lovely to see them growing in confidence year after year, as they make the most of the many opportunities which they are given to act on stage.
