Scholarships and Assisted Places

Every year, we are delighted to recognise and support pupils who have artistic, academic or sporting gifts with Scholarship Awards, Headmaster’s Awards and Bursary Awards (also known as Assisted Places). We warmly invite day and boarding pupils from any school to apply for an award and discover the benefits of an inspiring Taunton School education.

We are proud to help our students to aim high and achieve their goals, and this includes being offered places at Oxbridge and leading universities in the UK, USA and Europe. We are educating our pupils to give them the qualifications and confidence to pursue their chosen careers anywhere in the world.

We offer the broadest possible curriculum in the Senior School and our Year 11 and Sixth Form results are regularly amongst the best in the region. As a non-selective school, we are particularly proud of this achievement and feel it is testament to our aim of helping every pupil reach their true potential.

What are the differences between Scholarship Awards, Headmaster’s Awards and Bursary Awards?

Scholarship awards

Scholarship awards are given to recognise talent in different areas.  Pupils are invited to apply for and take part in a structured assessment which may involve an exam or audition, for example, as well as a short interview. Scholarships are awarded for entry into Year 7, Year 9 and Sixth Form (Year 12) and remain with the pupil until they leave school at the end of Upper Sixth.  Scholarship entry and information packs are available on this page and also by contacting our Admissions Managers. These prestigious scholarship awards usually offer a day or boarding fee discount.

Headmaster’s Award

Headmaster’s Awards are also merit-based and are available for pupils joining the school outside of the regular scholarship periods. They reward and recognise talent in the same way as scholarship awards do and are similarly assessed.  Recipients are expected to take part in all scholars’ sessions and will benefit from the same opportunities as scholars.  Headmaster’s awards are also usually offered with day or boarding fee remissions.

Bursary Awards or Assisted Places

Bursary Awards or Assisted Places are means-tested and offer fee assistance to enable talented pupils to join the school who might otherwise be unable to do so, due to financial circumstances. A bursary application form can be obtained from our Admissions Manager or downloaded from the website. The form can be completed and submitted in confidence online or by post, along with any required supporting documentation. The result of the application process will be given to the Headmaster for his decision.

It is possible for a pupil to receive bursary support to top up a Scholarship or Headmaster’s Award, when affordability may be a barrier to entry. Bursary awards are also offered to provide standalone fee assistance which is not linked to a scholarship application.
