The core PE curriculum is wide and varied, giving pupils the opportunity to experience many types of physical activity in Years 9-11.
These include athletics, basketball, badminton, cross country, dance for girls, gymnastics, rounders, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Plus, an introduction and familiarisation in the Fitness suite, health related fitness and personal survival.
PE is offered at GCSE Level and challenges pupils to reach their full potential, whilst developing the necessary skills required for careers in the health and fitness, leisure and sport industry.
At Taunton School we follow the iGCSE syllabus for the full award in Physical Education.The course is divided into two sections: Practical (50%) and Theory (50%).
Practical studies the effective performance and analysis of physical activities and assesses four activities from a wide range of activities. You must cover a minimum of two groups from seven groupings of activities. You must show the ability to analyse and improve practical performance in one of the four chosen practical activities.This aspect of the course is continuously assessed and externally moderated at the end of year 11. It is important to note that ability in a number of practical sports is vital.
Theory comprises of a study of the factors affecting performance and participation in physical activity and is sub-divided into three sections:
- Factors affecting performance
- Health, safety and training
- Reasons and opportunities for participation in physical activity
There is a 1hr and 45 minute written paper comprising of short answer questions and extended written answers, one from each of the three units of study.
Physical Education at GCSE level has continued to grow in popularity on a national level and that increase has been reflected at Taunton School where, over the years, a large number of students have achieved a consistently high percentage A*-B and pass rate.
At A Level, pupils follow the Physical Education OCR Syllabus. A2 Level studies include Exercise and Sports Physiology, Sports Psychology, Historical Studies, Practical Performance and E&A.
We also offer BTEC Sport and Exercise Sciences at Sixth Form and vocational qualifications in lifeguarding and NGB coaching qualifications in a variety of sports.
