Taunton School International students raise £1000 for Somerset homelessness charity, Arc

Posted: 21st June 2021

International students at Taunton School have raised over £1000 for a local homelessness charity supporting people in Taunton by spending a night outside.

Arc (formerly Taunton Association for the Homeless) houses, supports and empowers homeless people in Somerset. The local homeless charitable organisation supports over 450 people per year.

The students prepared for the evening by sourcing cardboard to sleep on, as well as using gazebos and sleeping bags and purchasing tents that will be donated to the charity.

Prior to the ‘Big Sleep Out’, the students met representative from Arc during a school assembly, where they presented a talk about the plight of homelessness in the UK and across the world and the effects it can have on a person’s mental and physical wellbeing during the school’s weekly assembly.

For many of the students, this experience was a challenge to step out of their comfort zone to learn more about the experience of people who have nowhere to sleep.

Taunton School, a leading independent school in Somerset, is proud of the support it provides to the local community by offering a significant number of assisted places, sponsoring local sports clubs and opening the schools’ facilities to local schools and the wider community.

Last year, the school awarded over £1,687,231 in bursaries for talented students to join the school on scholarships.

The School is also supporting a project driven by Taunton Association for the Homeless that will see the creation of a homeless hostel for former service personnel in Taunton.

The Sleep Out took place on Saturday 19th June. To learn more about the charity and to contribute to the students’ fundraising goals, please visit: https://bit.ly/2Sb2r8g
